How many electric vehicles can our current supply of lithium power?

“Worldwide lithium resources identified by USGS started to increase in 2017 owing to continuing exploration. Identified resources in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 were 41, 47, 54, 62 and 80 million tonnes, respectively.”

There is roughly 10 kg of lithium needed for an electric car, give or take. The latest estimate (which is still growing every year) would therefore be sufficient for 8 billion cars.

For comparison:
“There are around 1 billion cars in use worldwide.”

Although their number is increasing, the amount of lithium is outpacing them by large.
